UP Weather Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for 8 Districts; Schools Closed till Class 8

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for eight districts in Uttar Pradesh, triggered by the impact of Cyclone Yagi in the Bay of Bengal. In response to the warning, district administrations have announced the closure of schools up to Class 8 in the affected regions as a precautionary safety measure.

Districts Under Heavy Rain Alert

According to the official weather bulletin, the following districts are likely to experience intense rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms over the next 48 hours:

  • Prayagraj
  • Fatehpur
  • Rae Bareli
  • Kanpur Nagar
  • Kanpur Dehat
  • Amethi
  • Sultanpur
  • Chitrakoot

These areas are expected to face localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying regions, and disruption of transport and public services.

Schools Closed in Affected Areas

In light of the IMD’s alert, local authorities have suspended all academic activities in schools up to Class 8 across the mentioned districts. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff amid worsening weather conditions.

District Magistrates have also instructed school managements to remain on standby for any further instructions depending on the evolving weather scenario.

Advisory for Residents

The Uttar Pradesh Disaster Management Authority has released the following safety guidelines for citizens in the alert zones:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially during rainfall and thunderstorms.
  • Stay indoors, particularly during lightning and gusty winds.
  • Do not take shelter under trees or near electric poles.
  • Keep emergency supplies ready, including flashlights, essential medicines, drinking water, and dry food.
  • Regularly check official weather updates on the IMD website or local government channels.

Cyclone Yagi’s Influence

Cyclone Yagi, though centered over the Bay of Bengal, has extended its impact toward northern India, influencing the weather in eastern and central parts of Uttar Pradesh. IMD has indicated that more rainfall is likely in adjoining districts over the coming days.
